Developed to insulate troops from the ground and fold away easily, here is the German Army Bundeswehr folding sleeping mat. Pre-creased for easy folds, this fellow tucks away into a stowable rectangle which can be used to support or fortify the contents of your rucksack. Unfolded, this is not very thick at all (4mm!?), so not a sleeping mat for comfort but rather to be a first layer to the earth and insulate the user. Because the mat is thin, it won't weight down your pack.
If you're finding the cold creeping through your outdoor sleep system and have room in your pack, why not give this a go next time. Ja das is gut.
