Description

Cold War? Or cold drink? Here we have yet another obscure East German surplus item! The experimental uniform trial UTV (Universale Tragevorrichtung …or is it Uniformtrageversuches...) canteen set, for NVA (Nationale Volksarmee) & friends, of the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik). Gott im himmel, acronyms aside, this may be the last canteen to be issued to the ''East Germans'', before acceding and reunification into the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990. Poor uniform trial of 1985-1990 never really got to be rolled out.

In economic or Cold War mentality (such as fear of contamination), this canteen has an unusual, insulating, moulded foam outer casing - less likely to freeze in winter or heat up in summer. Also probably noise buffering, the foam outer has indents for the strapping to sit nicely. The plastic, synthetic leather straps hold the aluminium cup on firmly and provide a point to anchor to other equipment. Remember to drink your water. Schnell!
